PFAS compliance deadline: 2029, with a proposal to allow 2031
EPA's limit for PFOA and PFOS in drinking water is 4.0 ppt, judged as a running annual average at each sampling point. Type your office ZIP to see which systems near you had a UCMR 5 result above that level.
The dates
| Date | What | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2027 | Initial monitoring due | Final rule |
| 2029 | PFOA and PFOS at 4.0 ppt, running annual average at each sampling point | Final rule |
| May 18, 2026 | EPA proposed letting systems request two more years (to 2031), and proposed rescinding the PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA and Hazard Index limits. PFOA and PFOS stay at 4.0 ppt. | Proposal, not final |
What one UCMR 5 result tells you, and what it doesn't
- It tells you a lab measured PFOA or PFOS above 4.0 ppt at a named sample point on a date.
- It doesn't tell you the system is out of line with the rule:
UCMR 5 results do not indicate compliance or noncompliance with the PFAS NPDWR Maximum Contaminant Levels
(EPA). - It doesn't tell you the water was the system's own: 64 of the 101 Texas systems above 4.0 ppt list purchased water as their primary source.
- It doesn't tell you what the system has done since. Many acted after reporting.
What it does tell an engineer: which utilities near you will be working through the rule's monitoring and, possibly, treatment decisions before 2029 or 2031. Texas public entities choose engineers on qualifications first (Gov't Code §2254.004), so knowing the record early is ordinary business development.
